Census 2011 Village Directory Definitions

Simple meanings of common District Census Handbook village directory terms used on Village Maps.

Simple Summary

This page explains census 2011 village directory definitions in plain English. Read it before using village maps, Census data, public facility details, PIN code information or land-record references from this website.

Why These Definitions Matter

Village Maps uses Census 2011 District Census Handbook village directory fields. These fields have specific Census meanings, so a reported facility should be read as a Census-recorded facility, not a live government certificate or current service guarantee.

Schools

School counts follow Census village directory rules. A composite school may be counted under more than one level, such as primary, middle and secondary.

Pre-primary includes nursery, KG, pre-basic and play school. Primary covers classes 1 to 5, middle covers classes 6 to 8, secondary covers classes 9 to 10, and senior secondary covers classes 11 to 12.

Health Facilities

Health facilities are Census-reported facilities such as CHC, PHC, sub-centre, dispensary, mobile health clinic, ASHA worker and medicine shop. They are not real-time service guarantees.

A community health centre, primary health centre, health sub-centre, dispensary, mobile health clinic, veterinary hospital, ASHA worker or medicine shop is shown only when reported in the source data.

Drinking Water

Drinking water sources are Census categories such as treated tap water, untreated tap water, covered or uncovered well, hand pump, tube well, spring, river, canal, tank, pond or lake.

Treated tap water means water supplied after treatment. Untreated tap water means piped water supplied without treatment. Hand pump and tube well refer to groundwater sources.

Roads And Transport

An all-weather road means the village approach was reported as usable in fair and foul weather. Pucca, kuchha, WBM and footpath are separate Census road categories.

National highway, state highway, major district road, pucca road, kuchha road, water-bound macadam road and footpath are separate Census approach-road categories.

Power Supply

Power availability means electricity was reported as available for the stated use. It does not mean uninterrupted electricity or current connection status.

Domestic, agricultural, commercial and all-use power are reported separately because electricity may be available for one use but not another.

Markets And Public Services

A regular market is normally open at least six days a week. A weekly haat is a market held once a week.

PDS shop means ration shop or control shop. Self-help group means a local group formed for credit and community support. Anganwadi and ICDS centres support children, pregnant women and lactating mothers.

Land Use

Land-use area is reported in hectares using Census village directory land-use categories such as net area sown, irrigated area, forest, fallow land and non-agricultural use.

Village land-use data is general area data. It should not be used to decide land ownership, plot boundary, survey number, mutation or legal title.

Nearest Facility

When a facility is not available inside the village, Census records may give the nearest place or distance range where the facility is available.

Distance ranges generally mean within 5 km, 5-10 km, or more than 10 km, depending on the source code reported in the village directory.
